Prostate

The prostate is a gland located below the bladder in men. It plays a crucial role in the male reproductive system by producing seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. While the prostate is an essential part of male anatomy, it is also susceptible to various conditions like prostate cancer.

Prostate Conditions

Prostate cancer is a common form of cancer that develops in the prostate gland, typically affecting older men above the age of 50 years.

Benign Prostatic Enlargement is a non-cancerous condition in which the prostate gland grows in size, leading to urinary symptoms such as frequent urination, weak urine flow, and difficulty emptying the bladder completely.

PSA test, or Prostate-Specific Antigen test, is a blood test commonly used to screen for prostate cancer. It measures the levels of PSA, a protein produced by the prostate gland, and can help in the early detection of prostate cancer.

Prostatectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the entire prostate gland and surrounding tissues, commonly performed to treat prostate cancer. Dr Tan is also skilled in performing robotic prostatectomy.

This procedure combines the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with a precise sampling technique to accurately diagnose prostate cancer.

Cryotherapy is a new minimally invasive treatment option for prostate cancer that involves freezing and destroying cancerous prostate tissue.

Bladder

The bladder is a hollow, muscular organ situated in the pelvic region responsible for storing urine before it is eliminated from the body. It plays a vital role in maintaining the body’s fluid balance and eliminating waste products.

Bladder Conditions

Bladder cancer begins in the cells of the bladder lining and is characterised by symptoms such as blood in the urine, frequent urination, and pain during urination.

A urine infection occurs when bacteria enters the urinary system and multiplies, leading to symptoms such as frequent urination, pain or burning sensation during urination, and cloudy or bloody urine.

TURBT is a minimally invasive surgical procedure performed to remove early stage bladder tumours through a camera passed into the urethra.

Bladder removal, known as cystectomy, involves the complete removal of the bladder and is typically performed to treat advanced bladder cancer. Dr Tan also performs robotic cystectomy and is one of a small handful of surgeons in the region skilled in this technique.

Kidney

The kidneys are vital organs located on either side of the spine, near the middle of the back. They play a crucial role in maintaining the body’s overall health by filtering waste products, regulating fluid and electrolyte balance, and producing hormones that control blood pressure.

Kidney Conditions

Kidney cancer can cause symptoms such as blood in the urine, persistent pain in the side or lower back, or a lump in the side or lower back.

Kidney cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form on or within the kidneys. Most kidney cysts are non-cancerous and do not require treatment, but larger cysts may need medical attention, including surgical removal.

Kidney stones form when there is a buildup of certain minerals and salts in the urine. They can vary in size and shape and can cause severe pain and discomfort when they pass through the urinary system.

Kidney removal, also known as nephrectomy, is a surgical procedure where the entire kidney is surgically removed, usually due to a large-sized kidney cancer. Dr Tan is skilled in performing both open and minimally-invasive (robotic-assisted & laparoscopic) nephrectomy.

Partial kidney removal, or partial nephrectomy, is a surgical procedure performed to remove a portion of the kidney while preserving the remaining healthy tissue. This approach is commonly used to treat localised kidney cancer and aims to maintain kidney function and minimise the risk of long-term complications. Dr Tan is skilled in performing both open and minimally-invasive (robotic-assisted & laparoscopic) partial nephrectomy.

Kidney stones can be treated using minimally-invasive techniques that utilise shock waves and laser technology.
